In person, he is a natural raconteur with the edge of a shock jock. Instead, he regaled me with anecdotes and allusions about his heroes and influences, many of them from his family tree. But the music clearly meant just as much to Campbell himself. The familiar songs meant a lot to these folks. He included weepers like Patsy Cline’s “I Fall to Pieces,” a favorite with the audience that often spurred lonely hearts to do just that. He sounded like a mountain opera singer.”Ĭampbell played several sets that kept Kitchens and the residents - among them Campbell’s 90-year-old mother, Eva, and his Aunt Darthula - riveted.
“I’d never heard anybody sing with that kind of command,” Kitchens says, “and with all the inflections and nuance in his voice tones and the crazy notes he was hitting, from a growl to a tremble. What he was hearing in Elkton weren’t just tasteful cover versions but masterful interpretations of the country-and-western canon that rivaled the originals. Kitchens had grown up with a Vietnam vet father playing classic country records around the house in Owensboro, Ky. I don’t know if I would have done English at university, or even become a comedian.Beyond the sheer force of Campbell’s presence, there was also his remarkable vocal range. My life would have been very different without Mark E Smith. They expanded my horizons as I learned more about the people their lyrics alluded to, like Franz Kafka, and I listened to their influences like the Velvet Underground.
Finally, through sheer weight of attrition, I heard I’m Into CB and something clicked, and I became a lifelong fan. I grew up listening to John Peel, but found the Fall irritating, repetitive and unintelligible. The entire double album of Public Castration Is a Good Idea by Swans.

It’s hard to let go of my childhood attachment to the Smiths, but I don’t know how to square Morrissey’s solo stuff with what he’s become. I remember hearing How Soon Is Now when I went to see the Smiths at Birmingham Hippodrome and dancing to it at a disco in Tucson, Arizona in 1995. Loads of artists end up doing terrible things, but the Smiths meant such a lot to my generation, to have him drift to the far right doesn’t sit. So many blokey songs like The Boys of Summer by Don Henley felt massively overproduced back in the 80s, but I now listen to them with a real sense of nostalgia. The song I secretly like but tell everyone I hate It’s really danceable with a great mandolin break. At first, people think: “What’s this rubbish?” then Snoop Dogg creeps up.
